DIY Decorative Orbs

I love to collect different decor items to style my mantle and shelves with.  I like to have a variety that I can rotate throughout the house and with the changing seasons. The cost can add up even when shopping somewhere budget friendly like Homesense so I have to be creative .

I really like the look of decorative orbs like these ones from West Elm.

As much as I like the look, I am not willing to pay $45 for the set! Instead I decided to create my own using wooden embroidery hoops.

I purchased embroidery hoops from Fabricland's closing sale. Embroidery hoops come with two hoops per package, so I bought 6" hoops and 8" hoops to make two orbs.

Using stain I had on hand, I stained both sets of hoops. I decided I wouldn't be styling them as a pair so I used Classic Grey for the 6" set and Espresso for the 8". I applied the stain with a foam brush and wiped off the excess stain with a cloth . *Make sure to cover the area you are working on and wear gloves when staining. I applied a small amount of Annie Sloan dark wax to the Classic Grey as it didn't look quite right.

I let the hoops dry overnight and then assembled them. Simply overlap the hoops into the sphere shape and tighten the adjustable hoop to keep them together.

That's it! I have two decorative pieces that sell for $45 and I only spent $5!! I love the look of the metal orbs as well but don't think there is a simple DIY solution.

I have an oil rubbed bronze sphere chandelier picked out for my dining room that will satisfy my metal orb crush :)

I'm sure I will make more trying different sizes, stains and paint to create different looks. For $5, its silly not to!
