I have been working away on our master bedroom since last fall to create a comfortable space for the two of us. I have shared my DIY headboard and nightstands so today I am sharing details on our accent wall and bringing the rest of the room together.
The makeover started with painting the entire room. The lower walls were painted a taupe colour and the rest an off white. Our house was built in the late 80's and the previous owners were not the best painters (paint all over the ceiling, trim painted to match the walls, etc). I completed some simple patching of minor holes and prepped the walls for painting.
I used Behr Toasty Gray for three of the four walls and gave the trim a fresh coat of Behr Ultra White. I love how much paint brightens and cleans up a room!
I wanted to do a navy accent wall and chose Behr Poppy Seed. My paint technique is improving but far form professional. After two coats, the wall looked a bit bare and blah despite the bold colour. I seriously debated painting over it or even matching it to the same colour as the rest of the room. Ultimately I chose against repainting and instead to hang a small gallery wall. I started accumulating pieces that coordinated with one another.
I bought the large canvas print, oval mirror and the yellow and cream frames from Homesense. The navy frame and arrow are from Walmart and the small gold mirror from Dollarama :). Again, I framed free pintables found online.
I hung the large print first and just sort of eyed up where I wanted the other pieces to go around it.
I LOVE the accent wall and am so glad that I did not paint over it!
I had dark, heavy drapes hung prior to making over the room that I replaced with a neutral, striped set from Winners. The lighter curtains let in so much more natural light which is great since our master is in the basement of our raised ranch home.
I purchased the Ikea HEMNES dresser a few years ago which is a great piece with tons of storage. I styled the top with decorative storage for my jewelry, a distressed frame from Homesense and a lamp from Target. Oh how I miss Target in Canada!
Other plans for our bedroom include replacing the carpet, blinds and our silver tube TV, not shown :)
Our bedroom is complete (for now) and finally feels like the cozy space I wanted it to be! What do you think?
